Dental Sealants

Quick, painless cavity protection — for kids and adults.

A Simple Way to Stop Cavities Before They Start

Look at one of your back molars in the mirror. See those deep grooves and pits on the chewing surface? Those grooves are where most cavities start. They're tiny, deep, and almost impossible to clean perfectly — even with great brushing. Food gets stuck in there. Bacteria settles in. And before you know it, you've got decay.

Dental sealants solve that problem. They're a thin coating of tooth-colored resin that we paint into those grooves, sealing them off so food and bacteria can't get in. The sealant hardens in seconds with a curing light, and that's it — instant cavity protection that lasts for years.

Who Should Get Sealants?

Sealants are most commonly recommended for:

  • Kids and teenagers as soon as their permanent molars come in
  • Anyone with deep grooves and pits on their back teeth
  • Adults who get cavities in the same spots over and over
  • People prone to cavities for any reason
  • Anyone who wants extra protection on top of normal brushing and flossing

For kids especially, sealants are one of the highest-impact preventive treatments we offer. Studies have shown they can prevent up to 80% of cavities in molars for the first two years after they're placed.

How Sealants Are Applied

The whole process is fast, painless, and usually takes just a few minutes per tooth:

  1. 1Dr. Carroll or our hygienist starts by cleaning the tooth thoroughly to make sure no food particles are trapped in the grooves.
  2. 2The tooth is dried, and a special conditioning gel is applied to help the sealant stick. After a few seconds, the gel is rinsed off.
  3. 3The sealant is painted into the grooves of the tooth, where it flows into all the tiny pits and crevices.
  4. 4A curing light hardens the sealant in seconds, and that's it. No drilling, no numbing, no recovery time.

You can eat right after. Most kids don't even notice it's there once it's in.

For Parents

If your child has just gotten their first permanent molars (usually around age 6 or 7) or their second permanent molars (around age 12), sealants are one of the easiest things you can do to set them up for a lifetime of healthier teeth.

Sealants are inexpensive and one of the most effective ways to prevent cavities. They're a no-brainer for most families.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do sealants last?

Sealants typically last 5 to 10 years. Dr. Carroll checks them at every cleaning and reapplies them if any have worn off. They're durable, but they don't last forever — and that's normal.

Are sealants only for kids?

No. Most people think of sealants as a kid thing because they're often applied to permanent molars right after they come in. But adults can absolutely benefit too — especially if you have deep grooves on your back teeth or a history of cavities in those spots.

Does getting sealants hurt?

Not at all. There's no drilling, no numbing, no anesthesia. Dr. Carroll cleans the tooth, applies the sealant, and cures it with a light. Most kids don't even realize anything is happening.

Are sealants safe?

Yes. Modern dental sealants have been used safely for decades. They're considered one of the most effective preventive treatments available — the Centers for Disease Control even recommends them for children's permanent molars.

Sealants are a small step that can save you (or your child) from years of fillings down the road. Ask us about them at your next cleaning or schedule a visit anytime.
